Rua do Século, come out to Calçada do Combro. If we go down the stairs and then go up in Poço Novo, we can see Sta. Catarina Church in the left, in the beginning of the stairs, followed by a big house that had been a convent with the same name.

In front to the church, starts right Travessa da Condessa do Rio, which goes to Rua de Santa Catarina and we can find Alto de Santa Catarina in the end of the street. Dispersed populations, from remote époques, occupied the west zone of the city, from Monte Fragoso to Pico da Boavista.

The big Portas de Santa Catarina, were the occidental limitations between the urban and the rural zones. From this belvedere we can contemplate a wonderful landscape above Lisbon. We detach Estátua do Adamastor, which arises in the group of houses of S. Paulo, Boavista and Tejo's margins. Alto de Santa Catarina is one of those spaces near the most city animation places that seem people can go sleep in peace and with toomuch silence. In its front, we can see the

other margin, the South margin of Rio Tejo (Palmela, Arrábida, Cacilhas, Porto Brandão, Trafaria…)

Since the XVIII century, this terrace, situated in the mount that formerly were known as Monte do Pico or Monte do Belveder, is known now as a belvedere. See the boats movement, were an appreciated recreation, and of that became the popular expression: "see boats in Alto de Santa Catarina".
