15 – Santa Justa Elevator

Santa Justa elevator is a work of the engineer Raul Mesnier Ponsard and the architect Louis Reynaud, who opted by a vertical elevator, with a neo-gothic decoration, with its arches and picture frames that makes a good link with the Carmo Convent ruins and, at the same time, dynamize the horizontal Baixa Pombalina.
A work that starts in the end of the XIX century, and was inaugurated in 1892, with 45 height meters, it is the only one vertical elevator in the entire city. It worked with vapor till 1907, the year when it started to use electric energy.
With two cabins it takes us from Baixa to Chiado, with capacity for 25 persons, it function all the weekdays, excepting Sundays and holidays.
