In this square there is a wonderful monumental public fountain (Chafariz do Carmo), supported by four columns. In the interior of the fountain there is a pyramid with four dolphins. Situated in this typical pombalino square, there is the Carmo Convent, a symbol of a big destruction of an ambitious Portuguese medieval project, caused by the earthquake. The central temple nave has 73 height meters.
The Republican National Guard Quarter is installed here since 1836, always linked to the 25th April Revolution.
